Cooling — the Old-Fashioned Way
A courtyard in a building in a bustling city provides a cool oasis of quiet.
While traveling in the southern part of Spain, we visited a number of homes and museums that used center courtyards in their layouts. Having a courtyard in a building in a bustling city provides an oasis of quiet and peacefulness — it also is a natural way to have a cooler space in a building, which is key when it is 104 degress outside. The courtyard above is in a museum in Seville that was originally a convent; the building dates from 1594.
