Get a Grip on Safety Glasses

If your hard hat knocks them off, here's a way to keep your glasses on.

By Elly Hart Issue 270 - Oct/Nov 2017

Safety gear has to fit you properly to be effective, but this can be a challenge for a woman and smaller guys. Safety vests are always too long and bunch up at the bottom around my tool belt; hard hats aren’t designed with ponytails in mind, so mine tips forward into my eyes; and safety glasses slide off my face. Sometimes I think my safety gear actually creates hazards.

My first solution for poor-fitting safety glasses was to wear goggles on my head and pull them down over my eyes when I needed them. But protective eyewear is mandatory at all times on my current job, so I’m now using silicone retainer hooks to keep my safety glasses in place throughout the day. Called Keepons, they’re available on amazon.com for less than $5. They slide onto the temples of your glasses to create hooks that grip the backs of your ears. I’ll let you know when I find a solution to the ponytail hard-hat problem, but with Keepons I’m one step closer to working comfortably and safely.
