Step Up Your Stair-Gauge Game
The longer length of these 3-in. stair gauges makes it easier to ensure an accurate layout when working with waned lumber.
Using tools that deliver accurate results for tasks like laying out stairs and roof assemblies is crucial, which is why I rely on Squi.Jig 3-in. Framing Jigs. These tubular stair gauges are made from lightweight aluminum with a 1-in. diameter. In addition to their high-quality construction, these gauges have a few features that set them apart.
First, they measure 3 in. long—significantly longer than standard stair gauges. To leverage that length, the gauges feature two 5/16-in.-wide openings for a square to sit in—one in the center and the other just inboard of the barrel’s end. The slot placement near the end is especially helpful when you’re working with waned lumber.
With a framing square seated in the end slot, the Squi.Jig extends far enough that, with just a slight edge to rest on, it will ensure an accurate layout. Aside from their use in stair layouts, these gauges can be mounted on the deck plate of a circular saw or even some laminate trim routers to serve as a rip guide. A pair of Squi.Jig 3-in. gauges costs $40 at squijig.com.
