Townhouse Transformation
A sleek, modern redesign maximizes space and light while preserving the building's historical charm.
This 3000-sq.-ft., two-story renovation of a townhouse atop its garage integrates contemporary design elements that complement the historical charm of the district’s diverse architecture. Once characterized by dark shingles and dated features, the building now presents a sleek and elegant facade, with strategic modifications to the bay-window shape, entry-stair layout, and window openings.
Inside, where there are four bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths, the renovation focused on creating a contemporary floor plan that takes advantage of the high ceilings and available natural light. The living areas were opened up to each other to maximize the townhouse’s footprint, while the tall, two-sided fireplace separates the living and dining rooms while preserving the open plan.
A dynamic floating staircase not only extends the open feel of the interiors but also allows natural light to permeate the levels. At the rear of the townhouse, the renovation opened up the living spaces to a patio and landscaped backyard, improving the connection between indoor and outdoor areas. Large windows and glass doors were installed to frame picturesque views of the Golden Gate Bridge, bringing the iconic scenery into the home’s interior.
