Paid $15 at a garage sale on the way home today for old Craftsman 10″ cast iron table saw, had a good Diablo blade and 1-1/2 HP GE motor so what could be lost – lots of wobble in the arbor, thought it probably just needed bearings – never saw a saw shaft spun in non-siezed ball bearing before. Spent 2 hours repairing, but do enjoy fixing stuff worth fixing others semi-discard.

Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Who's the fairest of them all?
I'm astonished you weren't able to pull at least 2 of those arbors out of your scrap pile.
You're slipping Art.
Joe H
The other arbors are in other table saws <G> (only have 4 of the Crafstsman old CI table saws)
Did find a source for the bearings at $2.74 vs Grainger $12, http://www.thebigbearingstore.com will see what the bearing quality is when they arrive, never ordered from them before. Bearings are one item usually have to buy new :(>
I think I'm finished with WW Graniger.... last week i had a water tower pump motor (5hp) go out... you don't want an office building full of folks calling you when it's 98' outside and no a/c... so against all things ME i go to purchase a new motor (dayton motor on a Teel pump) I get a first week dude @ the grainger counter... waste an hour finding yeah he can get me the motor for $970.00 but it will be 2 weeks... so i go for a whole new pump $1500.00... but 5 days... I knew it was just the rear/back bearing (non shaft side) so i call my guy & tell him to pull the rear cover off the motor... he said the bearing had locked up and spun in the housing so i ask the grainger guy can i buy just the rear housing... "naaa u have to replace the motor" and this was thier expert motor guy not the first week guy... so I go get the part & bearing... go to a bearing place get the bearing... then he refers me to an electric motor shop who sends me to the US Motor distributor down the road.. ie: dayton motors = US Motor... dude says "yeah we sell that end plate have it in stock and we even sell em to grainger"... anyway $70 total bearing and new end housing and I'm back in business... saved me a week of mad folks and $1400... guess u just have to know stuff... but how many people do... if I'd called any service guys I'd be out a min of 2k with the service call....
p
if you don't spend it... u don't have to make it...
started out with nothing... and got most of it left...
> I get a first week dude @ the grainger counter...
Yeah, it all depends on the experience and knowledge of the staff. Maybe it's just the local guys here in LA, but I've had excellent results from Fastenal. They take the time to understand the problem and hook you up with the best solution.

Grainger is a rip off.
They exist to service the needs of maintenance department employees who have zero concept of the bottom line.
I've can't think of anything in their catalog that can't be had elsewhere for less, often times 50% or more less.
Joe H
Mr. Hound, I seem to see one of those old craftsman saws in the scrap metal bin at the local recylcing center every week; don't know if it would be woth shipping costs for ya -
Since you only have 4, thought you might like another dozen or so (I have one myself, my grandad's)
Only buy'em at garage sales if there is a good 1 HP or more motor attached. It is a shame that most DIYS have not even the sense to replace bearings.
Those old Craftsman saws (1970s) are excellent if you:
1. do all the alignments AND use loctite,
2. replace cast zinc belt pulleys with steel or cast iron or link belt
3. the biggie is to remove and true up the arbor and blade mounting face in a lathe, including the treaded portion boss - can then easily cut paper thin wood slices with a good fence and blade.
Luka: Unfortunately, the more stubborn manifold bolts often entail drilling out the old bolt and retapping. Have had some luck with penetrating oils, ice cube on bolt when engine hot, rapping head axially with hammer, or air impact set at just below bolt shear, but not too often.
Art, I forgot to ask you while I was there...
What is the secret to getting bolts out of exhaust manifolds ?
Apply heat to the bolt, and cold to the manifold, or versy-visey ???

vice -versa. Plenty of PB BLASTER Too. And EZ outs. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
I see Jeff has a quality Filson Packer hat on or it appears to be. I have one that has seen better days. I intend on replacing it somewhere around the 25th of December.

Art,
Keep an eye on the big guy, he's probably the one that chewed the chunk out of that shaft in the first place !
Arrrgghhhh ! Snarl !
