Hi all,
I came across a set of plans recently where the architect specified a double layer of 5/8″ drywall for sound resistance. We always do a double layer of 5/8″ for fire code, but for sound we would typically use 1/2″ soundboard.
Has anyone used a 2x layer of 5/8″ for sound control? Yes I do know how to build true sound resistant walls with staggered studs and all that, just wanted to know bout this technique.
Thanks,
Alex

one of the techniques for acoutic work is to use mass to absorb the energy of the sound waves.
Soft surfaces confuse sound waves and soundboard baffles them. sealing cracks stops air channelleaks. It usually takes a combination of methods to get satisfaction.
