30# Felt or Shingle-Mate ?

GeneR | Posted in General Discussion on August 23, 2005 04:25am

Hello

I am getting ready to shingle my roof and was at the lumber yard getting prices and ordering my shingles. The counterperson recommended Shingle-Mate instead of using 30# felt. I like 30# because it lasts! I will tear off the old shingles and then put down the new shingles. My concern is that this is not my full time job and will shingle mate hold up for 2-3 weeks in the Sun & Rain ? What do you think? Have you had any problems? Located in Western Pa.

Thanks

GeneR

Take a look at "Titanium UDF".  It is a newer style underlayment based on plastic.  I'm having to use some felt (75#!) to smooth out some bumps, and the felt sucks compared to how easy the Titanium is to use, lay, and walk on.  It will last at least 6 months in the open (probably more, but they say 6 months)

It comes in 4' wide rolls that cover 10 squares (1000 Sq. ft.), I got it for about $125.  Also, it's much lighter than felt so it's easy to work with on your own.

gene... we used to use 30 # felt... now we use  RoofTopGuard II

5'  x 200' rolls... use roofing tins for application.. can leave it exposed for 6 months

one 10 SQ. roll weighs less than a roll of 15# felt... costs us $135 / roll

but works great for us .... we usually strip , paper-in .. then get a roof top shingle delivery

Mike's right, RoofGuardII is amazing stuff.

Wish I could buy it locally instead of UPS.

Cost is about the same as felt, lasts forever exposed. Wind won't bother it if you string/staple it.

Got a picture of the string/staple method?

Seems I read that in here or a some tips on building  article somewhere.

I use plastic cap felt nails, and have had to nail battens over roofing felt  when I know the prevailing wind direction.

This nail/stable sounds like a faster/better solution. I would like to know more about it.

I am not impessed with Shingle-Mate! I wish i had just used 30# felt! Shingle Mate has a major shrinkage issue. It has been on for 5 days now and has shrunk about 5/8 of an inch from the edge of the drip edge. Plus you can almost tell that there were valleys on the roof. I guess when i do the valleys i will slice down the middle and lay in some 30# felt with a layer of Ice & Water protection. But it does roll out nice and looks good with no wrinkles. It dries very quickly BUT when the dew hits it it will wrinkle just like rergular felt which is the reason GAF claims that is a superior product! NOT! I would not reccomend it!

I have been hearing good things about 'Tianium UDL'. So much so I went and bought some for an upcoming project.

I would use Grace Ultra Ice and Water barrier over the whole roof. :)
