Why is this width so rare where I am? My suppliers all say that they have not heard of gypboard at this width. Avoids the extra joint when doing 9/0 walls, and believe me, there are plenty of tall walls being built here.

I can only guess, not knowing where you're located, but...........
They probably haven't gotten enough requests to make it worthwhile stocking it yet. Keep on them. Tell every other contractor you know about the stuff - They may not know it exists. If you can get enough people interested and asking, it will pop up somewhere sooner or later.
You might appeal to the competitive side of you suppliers - Tell them they can corner the market on 54" drywall by being the first to stock it. If they have the 54" drywall, and someone wants it, they might just order ALL their drywall from them.

I went to USG's site and downloaded a catalog. Didn't see mention of that width, but I know I have bought it for my rockers before. Just not here in New York's Adirondack region. I have put in the request at my supplier's desk.
We have a USG plant right here in town, not 15 minutes from my house. The local suppliers don't have a clue. 54 inch rock is just not available. Just 48" by 8', 9', 10', 12'. I know that 16' is used in some locations but you can't get it here. But we can get a ceiling rated 1/2" rock for spanning 24".
Ralph, you ever take a tour of the plant? A worthwhile trip. Saw a sheet well over 400 ft long at the certainteed plant in Port Clinton. Mama mia, that's drywall. Very interesting process. Oddly, our usg drywall supply has had and offered 54's for a while. Local lumberyards don't get it. I would think if you could get an order up for however they ship it (unit?) they would special order it. More than likely for one job, just scab it in gene. Pay the finisher v. pay the supplier.__________________________________________
