This is done, paid for, over. Client and their decorator signed off and wrote checks.
But it looked awful to me. The mantleboard is what I am talking about.
What would you do to improve it? There was no question about the material. It had to be rustic, pine, slab, waney edge (live edge) outboard.
The stone textures are just there to give you an idea. I don’t have seamless textures for SU to closely match the cultured stone and granite.

Maybe pine boards covering the drywall box above.
Did they have a plan for the big blank space above the mantle?
I'da flipped it over, wide edge on the topside.

and make it overhang more, at least in the front, but probably the sides as wellI wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then
also yep. maybe the bottom (short) edge of the flipped mantle where the wide edge appears to be in the pic.

yep.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
the problem lies in the chase above.
If the stone work and mantle is rugged applalachian style, use pine T&G or roughr. If it is nice marble and polished mantle, use painted raise d panel detailing

The chase is what's killing it. It looks too weak. Need to take the stone up to the ceiling. Also, that mantle board has to be flipped, so the widest portion is on top...
Gene, I'm guessing from the live edge detail that the slope wasn't too pronounced. I sort of like that idea... and might have played with sloping the chase in the same direction.I did this for a hot German fraulein, who insisted she only wanted 2" of shelf... "just enough to sit a pinecone"She loves it, but never did get a pine cone. Now you see this one-eyed midget

Great rendition Snort 'Prima'By any chance, is that hot fraulein named Shatzi ? ('snort!)Steinmetz.
Another vote for taking the stone up to the ceiling.
Not sure about the shape of the chase, seams to look
"Framed" in to me.
I shoulda said . . . the chase was there.
All that happened here was that some crappy tile facing got ripped off the hearth and its apron, then the wood substrate structure for the hearth got ripped out and replaced with lower so we could do the granite without coming up into the fireplace opening.
Where there is stone, there is crappy ceramic tile under. It got Durock'd over, then the phony stone.
No one asked for anything over the drywall chase, which was there before, and still is.
The word was from the start, hey, this is a budget job. This, from a client that just spent $8MM or so on a little piece on the water nearby that has among other things inside, eight steam showers.
I was simply not pleased with the mantleboard, which looked all wrong to me. No one specified which way the waney edge was to tilt. It just happened.

Gene,
Do you have some actual pics of work that you have done rather than conceptual sketchup drawings that you often post, or jobsites you drive by and take some pics?
A couple of years ago you started to post a 32mm kitchen project, then the post went away. What is the deal?
A lot of us BT'ers work hard to make a living and take time to post "our" work and do not start conceptual threads.
All,

Wow! Having a difficult day, Chuck? Didja really need to bring in the conflict and the drama?
Whatsa matter with not having to work? No one ever told me that Breaktime participants all had to be Johnnie Paycheck folks. Nor did they tell me they were forcing you to read my posts.
Put me on "ignore," if it bothers you so much.
Recent work? Just today, I am getting near the end of a little cherry piece I'm making for my grandson. It's a treasure chest, and has a little English-made half mortise lock. Here is the keyhole, which will get plated with a small brass escutcheon. Cut with a drill, detailed with a coping saw and a file.

I worked a whole lotta 70-hour weeks when I was a suit, and am glad to be retired, building a house once in a while when I want to, and puttering away with cabinet jobs. This silly fireplace thing was part of the last cabinet thing a couple weeks back. Pretty boring boxes, cheap slides, no frills, all finish in rustic knotty alder. If you really want, I'll go back and do a photo shoot of it.

On more than one occasion, I too have wondered if Gene has actually "done" any work or just likes to impress us with his SU skills.
Most posters here that are gifted designers as well as trades-persons ( Smith, McDesign, and Piffin to name a very few) , elect to share the conceptual drawings in addition to (not in lieu of) the finished product.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'm way more "impressed" with job-site progress and finals than I am with software renderings.
Anybody who's been here more than a hot minute knows darn well how good Gene's Sketch-Ups are. How about showing us more of the real deal like that flawless mortise?
MHO, worth price charged. The best reward for a job well done is the opportunity to do another.
Yeah, I see what you guy are saying.Gene does tend to suck informational help more than provide it back to the gang, but he does occasionally contribute things worth knowing. And he probably helps organize jobs more than do them. He is kinda old ya know - I'm getting that way myself!;)When he first came here he was trying to organize jobs based on the information we could give him here and his computer skills. He would ask so many detailed questions that I nicknamed him Mr Mico for his micromanagement of jobs, and with good humour he took that as his screen name for a while. I figured he would drive his subs and labour off by his micromanagement of his jobs and for all I know, he did, but meanwhile, I think it has been an overall contribution to the forum in that his questions and conceptions here help every one to learn and to imagine.Besides, a guy could post photos of somebody elses work and claim it as his own. That has always puzzled me about the forums, that a few pictures really seems to accentuate somebodies reputation and credibility, but I usually know if somebody knows their stuff from what they write, not from what they post in pictures.Where I enjoy the photos more is when i learn from them - like with say, Deiselpigs progress stuff teaching us process and method or your own moneypit thread showing plain old determination of one man beating the odds, like I did when I was younger. We each have out own contribution and balance sheet.

Thank you for the "rest of the story" Paul. Downside to this type of communication is that so much is lost in translation and/or transference. The net is a great place for a person to become anybody or anything they wish to portray, and certain repeated behaviors tend to bring out the cynic in some of us. I'm quite sure that Chuck meant his post to be an ill-formed question rather than an insulting statement.
Great thing about the fests is that you'll find out real quick if there's any 14 y.o. girls masquerading as BTers.

I love it when you and others come on the board and say "What do I do with this situation", and then a picture to help out.
I only wish I took the time to learn scetchup, or that I was smart enough to give a pertinent reply.
But I love the interaction of ideas.
I have no idea if you follow up with finished pics or not. I love it when people to give the conclusion to a situation weather it is verbal or in pics.

I'm working hard to understand your post. It seems heavy laden with negative implications, then you admonish us all to clean up the forum?A large part of the tavern cleansing had to do with negative derogatory posts and commentsIf that is not what you were trying to do, please explain what it was you were implying - meanwhile I am simply confused by your choice of words.Gene does do a lot of his threads to pick our brains. That gives us the chance to take out brains out and show them off.

It would be nice if, after all the brain-picking Gene does, he'd show the end result more often. He's done it a few times and it's always interesting when he does.
I'm agreeing with you and duanne that the mantle edge should flip but not enough to change it now that it's one. Maybe I'd change my mind with a real photo to see the actuall as built.I liked snorts picture of FP with the tapering shroud chase above that neo-Rumsford.

>I liked snorts picture of FP with the tapering shroud chase above that neo-Rumsford.<
I agree. I think it's the simplest answer drawing attetnion away from the mantle. The tapered box could be raised panel, copper with decorative stamps or even a rough finish/tooled plaster. Right now it looks like 2 boxes stacked on top of each other.
Good eye, that was built to a Rumsford throat... but I was there when the masons set it, and I'm not sure I'd build a fire in it<G> Now you see this one-eyed midget

Cover the drywall with metal--either rusty steel or oxidized copper (or maybe a sort of antiqued bronze look).
There's nothing wrong with that display that a moose head can't fix.

in my minds eye i see an old heart pine resawn beam maybe 4-6" thick and however wide... that says this is the place at which you stop looking and i need the stone to hold me up...... so you really wouldn't notice the chase... just think it needs the "beef" what you show is too wimpy imho
p
I'm with the others that think the chase above the mantel is the problem. Too much visual weight and interest below, then nothing up top for balance.
Since the look is rustic with the live edge on the mantel, I'd stay with T&G pine or maple above. Maybe you could use some of the prefinished wide plank flooring materials available. Board & batten cedar would be a good option, too, or a traditional panelled treatment if you used a really aged treatment for the finish...maybe a paint with rub-through showing stain and raw wood below it. Wide, rustic board run horizontally would be an interesting option.
