House was built in the late 20s on a crawlspace in Alabama.
I am pulling up a couple of layers of old vinyl and/or linoleum floor tiles in my kitchen. Underneath the lowest layer is a fiberboard underlayment. Underneath this and on top of the hardwood floor is a red material that appears to have been troweled down. I assume it may have been an adhesive?
Anyone know what this material is? Could it contain asbestos?

Don't know the name of the material, but have seen it before. I am not 100% but if memeory serves it does have asbestos. Get it tested for safety sake
or just assume it is asbestos, keep it misted down against dust, and use a respirator rated to N100 and a niosh vacumn.

This company makes a soy based mastic remover for mastic with asbestos, http://www.franmar.com, I have not used the mastic remover, but if it works as good as their paint remover it should do the trick.
