advice on “acoustical sealants”?
Hi,
Have soundproofed interior walls in new construction with fiberglass batts and Homasote under the sheetrock. After mudding, taping, and sanding is complete, would like to seal seam between ‘rock and floor as well as seams around electrical boxes, plumbing, etc.
What’s the best product to use? I understand there are “acoustical sealants” in a caulking tube. Any advice?
p.s. in addition to soundproofing, part of the rationale for sealing is to lock those nasty fiberglass particles away from the living space.
Thanks,
Ed

I used it extensively back in 1990 when I built my house. It's an excellent caulk/sealant. One place I used it was in my crawl space to seal the vapor barrier that I installed - I recently checked a number of the seams, the sealant is still flexible. The only caveat is that it can be pretty messy, but if you are using it in locations that will not be visible, you needn't worry about that.
Thanks--I'll check it out
Yea, I've used that Tremco product as well. Up here it's called "black death".
It's primarily used (dubiously, in my opinion) as a vapor barrier sealant on exterior walls. VERY messy/gooey/sticky...But probably quite effective for your purposes.
Try it, you'll like it.
think gasket.
foam backer rod.
Way less messier!
