amazing HD experience

brucet9 | Posted in General Discussion on November 1, 2008 04:40am

I walked into my local Home Depot store and realized that for the first time ever I was finding every shelf at HD fully stocked – no empty spaces anywhere – and not one item out of place. Not only that, but there were lots of friendly orange apron “associates” in every department, just falling all over themselves to be helpful.

Time to look stage left to see if Rod Serling was there? Halloween prank? Nope, I was there one half hour after the doors opened for the grand opening of a new store. 🙂

Just remember, it will only go downhill from here.

Maybe they listened to my seriously when I lit into them about a special order cabinet that went south ... and so did the replacement/refund process. I was p---ssed and I let them know it in a number of letters. When the rep called to take care of settling it ('cause the store staff were too inept to realize that an angry customer was not a good thing to have when it only meant a few hundred dollars to them).

If I would have been in the store instead of on the phone on a couple of occasions, I would have been in jail.

Maybe they are being a little smarter and turning a new leaf. My wife mentioned the attentiveness of staff recently when she 'had' to go in a HD store.

Maybe I will get lucky. I just scored a bathroom remo at cost plus where the customer worships at the HD altar so they want me to buy as much as possible there. They will choose fixtures and tile at the store in Florida and I will buy them here.Pray for me...;)

I wonder if your customers will be picking things that your local store doesn't carry...

"Pray for me..."I am not sure that even God can help you on this. One of the problems is that they might not stock the same stuff at both locations. Different taste and other reasons.

No problem finding a parking space up near the door too.
They are scrambling to get some of that stuff OFF their shelves.

Business is hurting. They have time to be nice now. I've noticed that with all my suppliers

I think when they open a new store they bring in a special team to get things set up and going.  Let's call them the 'A Team'.  Later the 'A Team' moves on to the next new store and leaves it in the hands of the 'B Team' that 'A' trained.  Over the months and years the 'B Team' leaves due to attrition or whatever and and the 'C' people start filtering in.

    1. DonCanDo | Nov 01, 2008 04:09pm | #7

The do indeed have an "A team", but that team is created from other stores in the area on an as-needed basis.  Some stay, some return to their original store and like many stores of this genre, many move on to other jobs... like Walmart.

Does that mean you got off the dialup?

Near where I live, both Lowes and HD are nearly empty while Menards is booming with business.

What I've found when a new store is opened is that there are many employees per customer.  After 4 to 6 months, the store's managers have found those employees that are on time, show pro-active customer abilities, and have potential.  Those that aren't are let go...trimming the payroll and leaving the heavy load to the remaining few....

i guess thats like being nice to your wife after you have beat and kicked her and she's left...  now you want to be nice ?  just so you can inflict more pain?

i can't say anything bad about the big box stores... if you never expect anything... then it's hard to be upset when you don't get it...

i shop for clearance stuff at both... this week at loews  i got some deep kitchen sinks... 6 of em for $24 ea  they were $148  i got 2  commercial door panic bars 36"  were $128 for $12.80 ea...   10 remote garage door locks were $19.99 for 92 cents each... have no clue what i'll do with em YET but the parts looked good...

Did they get rid of the new CEO they brought in a few years ago and begin to realize that business exists for its customer and not the greedeaters.
