David - I had a bad experience shooting MDF. The material that gets displaced by the nail makes a little mound that really looks bad when painted. Maybe it was something I did wrong, but I haven't used MDF trim since. - jb
*jb,Thanks for confirming my hunch. 16ga. nails would displace less material. Which did you use?David
*I looked on the box and it said .069", so I guess that is 15 ga. I have Senco guns, maybe you know what guage they use. - jb
*Hello Jim, Read your post and just wanted to add that I too had the same problem shooting 15 gauge nails into some MDF trim that Ihad made up in my shop for some windows I was installing. Since then I have made up jam extensions and trim out of Tru-Pan (a ultra-light form of MDF) and have never experienced the dimpling with this product. The 4x8 sheets are also much easier on the back when picking them up to run them through the table saw. MDM
*The new ultra-light MDF is a dream compared to the old stuff. A decent finish on the original mdf takes a lot of sanding. Every dimple cause by a nail should be smacked once with a hammer and then sanded flush. The ultra-light MDF dosen't dimple as seriously, but sanding before painting is still a good idea
*Ultra-light MDF sounds great! Are you guys left or right coasters? Who produces the stuff? Maybe it's easier on saw blades and routers too?Dave
*i don't believe this..i've been surfing, seeking the exact same question...15ga. or 16ga. nailer for homemade, 3/4" MDF trim? now, i will buy a less expensive 16 ga. gun. any reccomendations? i am consideing the Porter Cable and the Accuset (by Senco).. what the price of the ultra-light MDF ??
