Any ideas fot a 37 ft unsupported breezeway roof?
Hi folks,
New to the forum but have been reading some amazing discussions and solutions so thought I thought I’d post the dilemma I’m trying to find a solution for. Any ideas would make my year! Thanks in advance
Dilemma:
My detached single family home is 37’ away from a cottage (see photos). A driveway is between the 2 buildings.
I need to connect the 2 structures with a breezeway roof without supports in the middle (due to car garage access beneath). Similar, but longer than the attached breezeway photo.
The home is in Hawaii so no snow loads but heavy winds & rain are issues to consider. The 2 structures are not parallel- one is pivoted (pigeon toed) slightly toward the other in the rear.
Question:
What is the best cost effective way to span 37 ft without center supports? (Preferred depth is 12 ft)
Thank you so much!
Rodney

Steel bar joists would work and aren't too expensive.
Cables. If you can get decent structures on the ends, you can pull cables between them and support the thing on the cables. Like a suspension bridge.
Rodney,
We did a 40' clear span years ago with 6x20 glulams. Your local lumber yard will spec for you. We had it all prepared and they put them in place for us with their spider.
