I’ve seen waterproof plaster showers and bathtubs published in several magazines in the past year but have been unable to find any details or spec. information. Has anyone had experience in specifying and/or installing waterproof plaster in a shower or tub? I am interested in installing it in my own home and would appreciate any information, details, spec’s, product data, etc.

Steven, yes I've done plaster shower surrounds. What you refer to as waterproof plaster is nothing more than exterior plaster or what people here in California call stucco. The objective in the shower is to do a hard trowel finish. Other than that, we applied it as a conventional 3 coat system. The finish coat needs to be a mix that can be hard troweled. In other words, many of the commercially prepared stuccos are mixed to achieve a sand, float or dash finish. They are prepared with specific grades of sand for that intention. The Brand that is most popular in California is La Habra. They make a product specifically for smooth trowel finish called Santa Barbara Mission. (I think or something close)
Check it out. Good luck
*A., I am thanking you on behalf of Steven for your help. GW
*I had to do a wall in a dormatory cafeteria dish room. I used Portland cement plaster in the same formula I would have used for exterior stucco for the scratch and brown coats. I had some swimming pool finish from a previous job. I used that to finish the wall. After about 15 years it looks as sound as the day it was put on. It has some stains but is power washed frequently and has never been painted. I think I would do a shower the same way.
