I want to build a stone arch over a gas cooktop. Concerns are with weight on top of base cabinets. All ideas would be appreciated

Pardon me if you've seen this answer before--I wrote one yesterday, but apparently it didn't get posted--Perhaps you could beef up the wall behind the base cabinets (if you have access) by adding more studs, or facing with plywood, and then lag steel angles to the wall behind the base cabinets so the projections of the angles support the bottoms of the legs of the arches where they land at the counter top. Or just stick 2X's or 4x's under the counter top down to the floor inside the cabinets.
Edit--Since it's been a while and you haven't had a lot of response, you might try posting this at Breaktime--those guys are pretty good.

I have done two of these out of 1/2 real brick veneer, (not stone). We used double layers of plywood bending stock laminated together over standard framing with liquid nails. not much weight and a lot of strength.
Any chance you can take it to the floor? Might consider the fake stuff if not.
