My guess would be that it might make a decent sideline, but a lousy career. You'd get a couple of jobs that they wanted yesterday, then nothing for extended periods.
Of course, they don't want to put any money into it, so the models would have to be as cheap as possible.
We recently did trusses for a church where the prints were really half-assed. they stopped the architect in the middle of drawing them, and said: "We'd rather put the money into the building than the prints". I suspect that you'd run into a lot of that type of attitude too.

It doesn't make 40 hours a week, but the hours it demands pay $90 an hour. It may be better to think of it as a hobby you get paid for, though a large commercial job will keep you busy.
probably depends on your market as well. If you're in NY, Boston, Chicago, LA, etc... there are likly a high concentration of firms that regularly do models.
In my sleeply little towm there are probably 3-4 working architects and if a need for a model comes up they're just as likly to have the office intern bang it out for (practically) free.
