If so, what are our options? Under the ceramic tile is this black layer substance, then plywood, then the original yellow pine wood flooring. So these layers are already at a height that is well above the wood flooring in the hall outside the bathroom. I don’t think building right on top of all this is the best idea.
Removal? Can we do this ourselves? Is it a serious threat to try removing it ourselves? What do we do?

It would be more than reasonable to assume that 9 x 9 ALONE in tile size is reason to suspect asbestos.

I agree that you probably have asbestos. What concentration, and in exactly which materials specificly makes a difference. Look in your phone book for industrial hygene labs, they will be able to test samples pretty quick for you.
Abatement is something you can DIY, but just like working with a table saw you can ABSOLUTLY give yourself and others real injury if you don't work with it correctly and safely.
Do some research. After I had an abatement company come out and take care of a bunch of different asbestos issues, I learned enough about the tools and techniques to tackle the other smaller tasks I occasionally run into.
