Asphalt – downside to paving in low temp
Fixin to get ready to have my driveway completely removed and paved. The quotes and specs are in.
Question though, is there any down side to having this done when temps are in the 30, 40, or 50 degree range? Any special considerations at all?
Thanks much,
Dan

None I can think of. The end quality will depend more on the nature of the substrate - the underlying soil material. is it a mineral gravel type, well compacted and drained?

Paving should be placed in weather that is 40 and rising, especially when the thickness is relatively thin (like for driveways). If you place paving below 40 the paving tends to cool too quickly and it is harder to reach the maximum density and you tend to get roller marks. Things are made worse if the paving is placed by hand and not with a paving machine. I guess the most important thing is to make sure that the ground is not frozen, and to get a roller on the paving quicker than usual.
Thanks for the feedback.
I don't imagine they will be placing this by hand - it's a fair amount of paving. About 100' from the street to the front of the 2 car garage, space for two cars to the left, and also goes along the garage to the right for 15'. Old material will be completely removed, substrate will be compacted properly, and the new asphalt will be layed in two, 2", lifts.
Many thanks,
Dan
