I need to attach a slab of 8ft long I 8 in wide I 3 inch thick cherry to a brick wall above a fireplace. The customer doesn’t want the means of support to be visible. In other words, I can’t use any brackets or fasteners that will show — not even plugs or bungs. Are there any techniques or types of fasteners that will allow me to do this?

Anti-gravity buttons. Available at http://www.jetsons.com. Your clients wouldn't be named Carole & Doug, by any chance?
*Kris: Seems to me the only possibility would be to remove a couple of bricks (spaced evenly behind the length of board). Since it is 3 inches thick you could then attach the board with some kind of bracket and replace a half brick above the surface of the board when finished. The hole with bracket would then be hidden.Of course, it would depend on whether the chimney behind the brick was in use and whether it was lined or not. But it could work and would be worth investigating. On a side note, I'm amazed at what people (Carole and Doug, perhaps?) expect from craftsman; they are so many times clueless as to how things go together.
*Bless you, Michelle. You don't know how many times I've bitten my input device (mouse) over Carole & Doug's "what's happening now" questions about this dream house they're planning. If it was on HGTV or Martha last week, it's on this board this week. I'd like to see how it turns out. Should be a compendium of every latest fad. Unfortunately, some will fade and others emerge during the construction, which should make for some interesting change orders.
*Could you make an adaption to the slot screw method, but use a bolt and epoxied on washer instead of a wood screw? I have done this in the past with thick shelving. Is this a shelf? Hafele also sell a keyhole plate, 271.53.000, and modular connectors, 262.47.049. Just two other thoughts.
*Jump back into the archives folks. There's a great discussion about attaching mantles several months back.
*Yeah, like it really matters that much if plugs show. Well, they didn't say anything about laminating another piece of cherry over the holes you're gonna drill straight through the whole damn thing, right? They probably want it to hold their priceless statues too, another miracle?MD

Ralph,
Thanks for pointing out the archived messages on this subject. They were very helpful, especially the line to the Brick Institute website.

*Sgian,I may be able to use a similar approach. I think I can create a large keyhole in the back edge of the shelf and then slide it over the bolt /washer. Do you know where I can get more information about the Hafele keyhole hardware? Is there a website I can look at for a description?Thanks.-- Kris

Hope this is of some help. There should be a phone number somewhere there, and an email contact if nothing else.
Sliante.
*Kris, I recently hung several 'floating shelves' on 80 yer old brick like you describe. I had a piece of plate steel made to which we welded several 3/4" metal rods. Make sure that whoever fabricates these for you gets them square and level or they wont work. Once you have the plate made I used my router to create a channel in the back of my shelves to accept the plate steel and the fasteners. Then drill your holes for the 3/4" rods. Mount the steel on your brick using tapcons or lag shields and slide the shelf home. If you leave about 3/16" of shelf on either side of your mounting plate channel --top and bottom then the mounting plate will be completely hidden. Hope this helps.
