I am making window boxes, probably 8 inches deep and wide, ranging from 24 to 48 inches long. They will be reasonably heavy when filled. There’s plenty of good advice on making attractive and functional boxes, but little on attaching them to the house.
My house is vinyl sided with foam board under the vinyl and I presume some framing under there somewhere. The exterior window frames are finger-jointed stock, under them the j-channel and vinyl.
My question is about attaching the window boxes without ripping out the window frames. Can any of you describe to me what the framing members are in a window’s rough opening, so I can take an educated guess about where the best points of attachment are for the window boxes? Can you point to a diagram online anywhere that would show what the framing “probably” looks like behind that vinyl?
And have any of you any other warnings or personal tricks of the trade that make for good window box attachment?
