Looking for reasonable approach for posts/masts to anchor awnings over deck. Posts will be concreted in ground beyond deck rail and suspect I need metal as the awnings will need to be held in tension. Suggestions for materials (galvanized steel, aluminum, other?) and whether to locate post in footer or install a sleeve to fit inside of pipe. Looking for long-term, attractive, yet cost effective method.
Awnings are the triangular “sail” type. Will secure with turnbuckle. Attachment will occur at +/- 12′ above grade. Anticipate posts will be angled out from sail in a somewhat free-form look. In the design phase so open to suggestions especially from those with experience with such awnings. Would like to have posts be akin to a mast to keep the sail motif. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

2-1/2" structural pipe in concrete. Have three of those welded to a 8" beam holding up my huge carport. Should work for awnings.
