Back Issues-Fine Homebuilding

JohninTN | Posted in Reader Classified on October 19, 2007 11:46am

My first post here. I need some room in my small shop so I’ve decided to sell my Fine Homebuilding collection. All are in excellent condition. When I called Taunton, they told me that posting here would be more cost effective than an ad in the magazine. I’m not a professional but really enjoyed the articles and picked up some good info. If anyone is interested, I have issues 1 thru 167, missing 159 and 161. Asking $200 plus shipping.

I got an estimate of shipping at the post office of about $90 if shipped media mail to the west coast. Obviously, less to less distant addresses. If freight is cheaper, I can build an enclosed crate. I have no idea of the cost to ship by common carrier.

Well, the sun rose... in so many colours it nearly broke my heart... Worked me over like a work of art...and I'm all part of that...

Any desire to piece them out?

I only lack some of the first 12.

Sorry, That would detract from the rest. I'll keep you in mind if nothing develops, but no promises.John

      1. JohninTN | Oct 30, 2007 12:55am | #16

OK! I have come to a very satisfactory arrangement with one individual. It has left me with quite a few back issues. I propose to sell these for shipping cost and possibly a small handling charge so I don't have out of pocket expenses for boxes, gas, etc. The available issues are:110-142
        144-156
        158
        160
        162-175

        1. rez | Oct 30, 2007 12:57am | #17

          I need issues 153 thru 175.

          Whatta you got to have?

          1. JohninTN | Oct 30, 2007 02:07am | #18

In the range you are asking about, I only have the following:153-156
            158
            160
162-175That is a total of 20 issues. I would guess that I could pack and ship for a total of $25. This is only a guess. If you want them, I will pack them up and get the cost of media mail at the post office.

          2. rez | Oct 30, 2007 02:48am | #19

ok, let me know the exact total.

          3. JohninTN | Oct 31, 2007 03:05am | #20

All I have now are issues 110 thru 152 except for 143 which sold. I found out the hard way that media mail is pretty much the same for a given weight no matter where it goes. I got an estimate on the last box of approx. $8 to ship from TN to LA, CA. Turned out that was the cost to ship to OH also. That covered postage only for 20 issues. All of these could probably be shipped for about $25 since they would require more than one of the boxes that I am using. I am trying not to go in the hole for the boxes, packing mat'l, gas, etc. I will probably quit monitoring this in about a week and dispose of whatever is left. This has been a great bunch of guys to deal with.

          4. JohninTN | Nov 09, 2007 02:21am | #22

Ok, this is my last post on these back issues. I still have #110-152 less 143. If no one wants them, I will probably dispose of them next week. If anyone wants any or all of them, use email to contact me since I will unsubscribe myself from this topic by next Monday.

John, can you send an email my way with what you need for the remaining issues?

All are gone. ErnieK took the last of them.

John- That has got to be the most slick and tight packing job I have ever seen or received.

TLE ,   Which ones are ya missing?  Not to cut in ....but I don't have a "complete set" so to speak. Let subscription lapse ; moved ; .. what ever. Anyhow I have some of the early issues. I've already made copies of what I need. And the rest I just plain don't have room ,plus I going to be moving . I'll get a cd of the back articles. I wish I had room for a more complete set. Maybe when I build that finial resting place with the real big new shop(not too many years from now). Anyway just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.  Bill D.  Quality Wood Chips

        Bill,

        I lack issues 1,2,4,6,7,8, 10, 11, 12.

If any of these are available, let me know.

        Thank you, Terry

Terry , No problem; I'll  try and dig 'em out today and see what I have. If I have the issues you want  you can have 'em for the postage. OK ?  Bill D. Quality Wood Chips

          1. TLE | Oct 25, 2007 04:12am | #7

            Bill,

            Thank you very much.

But I must offer more than just postage, we'll come up with something.

            Again, thank you.

I bet I have a couple of those, Terry.  In fact, I am certain I have at least 1 of them.  They are down at the old house in the shop and we'll be working down there Friday.  I'll try to remember to check and let you know.

Cripes allmighty, man.  I can't believe you and I are still talking about these danged old issues!

Okay.  I made a list and put it in my traveling phone book.Loren Wallace for president.

Like we've said both said - the magazine had a different style back with the first few years. Seemed to be more interested in conveying knowledge of different techniques and concerns then the glossy "gee, look at these pictures" of now.<!----><!----><!---->

Still is a favorite magazine of mine though.<!----><!---->

Got one for you, brotherman.  Send me your mailing address (again) and I'll drop it in the mail.

You get all the Riverfest photos you wanted?  Be glad to send a group shot or two along as long as I'm sending a magazine.

I got to tell you man, just looking through my stash of early issues put me in the way back machine...got to run, found a bunch of stuff I want to reread (those old time carpenters sure had some funny hairdo's though! Big old sideburns and such!).

Far out, man.Loren Wallace for president.

            Jim,<!----><!----><!---->

My address is on your way.<!----><!---->

Yes, I did get the group shot from Riverfest - thank you. Yours and Calvin's camera work makes me jealous, my best pictures usually have my camera strap hanging over the lens!<!----><!---->

Tim's advancing his blacksmithing skills. Now he does demonstrations at local festivals and such, about 6-8 a summer. And he still hasn't made me the oversize dividers that he was going to start before he made yours and Calvin's scribe/compass’s.<!----><!---->

            Thanks again,<!----><!---->

            Terry<!----><!---->

P.S. Was that crack about old time carpenters' funny hair cuts directed at pictures of my early days??<!----><!---->

No, no, no, I meant all those photos in those early issues.  Looks like the kinds of hairdos and facial hair we all wore back then.  Kind of fun to revisit.  I didn't see any bell bottoms, but then again, there were plenty of cut offs.  I had forgotton about cut offs, working with a cigarette dangling, narry a hardhat in sight.Loren Wallace for president.

Terry , Hi and sorry for not getting right back to you. The issues were in stacks here and there. But I did not find any of the issues you were looking for , I have back to issue # 19  I'll keep searching the stacks. They must have gotten lost thru time and space. Like I said I've moved acouple of times since I started to receive the Mag. Again my apologies. But all the rest are available to any one who wants them just for the postage. I'll also put that in another post for everyone to see. I'll also try to put what I have or don't have in the list. Like I said before, I'm in the process of "down sizing" Again sorry for the delay , hope you find the ones you want. Have a good day, I'm off to look at a railroad passenger car we (my partner and I )are going to work on. Bill D. Quality Wood Chips

          8. TLE | Oct 27, 2007 12:52pm | #12

            Bill

            Thanks anyway for looking.

I started subscribing around #20 and after a while I decided wanted to pickup some of the early issues. By the time I really got rolling, the earliest ones weren't available throught the magazines' back issue department.

Jim Blogett has been told me that he filled in his collection through E-bay and advised me to do the same. I've got such a slow connection speed that random searches like that just aren't appealing. Strongly considering DSL in the near future - maybe I will get this collection complete yet.

            Thanks again.

            Terry

          9. billy5151 | Oct 27, 2007 01:26pm | #14

Terry  no problem , like I said I'm down sizing and they gotta go. Maybe posting them on E-Bay would be the way to go. I know what you mean about computer speed ... we just upgraded to DSL , man what a difference. Still not as fast as cable . But much improvement. Good Luck.  Bill D. Quality Wood Chips
