I am building a passive solar and off-grid house, so I am concerned about energy efficiency. I don’t want to live in a picnic cooler, however, so I am wary of using foam or urethane insulation to prevent conductive heat loss through the studs (“bridging”). I am wondering if anyone has used any material or technique to prevent bridging without sealing up the whole house in foam. I am thinking, for instance, that I could use something like sill-seal on each stud between the stud and sheathing. Thanks for your comments.

Using sill seal on the studs will only marginally increase thier r-value so they will still be the weak link.
The double wall method is one way to stop bridging.

Look around here for threads where Mike Smith describes his "Mooney Wall". He posted some pics too. Basically the interior of the wall is furred (sp?) or "strapping" as dem Yankees call it, with horizontal 2x2s. This solution appears to be the ticket.
