Please make sure that if you have a child that is a catcher that they where proper gear. It was a freak accident, but maybe the kids can where something more to protect their chest.
This is what happened to this this poor kid. He was wearing proper gear.

As a catcher in my youth-long enough ago to have used way less safe equipment-I now realize the danger faced by those behind the plate as well as the other players and spectators. In spite of advances in sports equipment one must realize that the games are still far from safe even forgetting about freak accidents.
A huge shame what happened, hoping your boy(s) have come to grips if this was a friend of theirs.
HS ball sports are VERY dangerous, and it's easy to forget how much energy a kid can impart to a ball. Last year a fastpitch softball pitcher wearing a face shield caught a ball just above her shield and it cratered her skull. It was dented in significantly.
