Installing some larger baseboards in a room that will eventually be carpeted with a wool berber (currently an oak strip floor). Is it better to leave a gap between the bottom of the base and the existing floor? If so, how much?
Sure appreciate any thoughts.

If you are installing base now, then I would say tight to the floor. Usually, the gap under the base results from base installed after carpet. The tackless strips probably won't care about the gap under the base, they need a gap next to the base.
The thing I do like about carpet is that it can hide the fact that the floor is wavy without scribing the bottom of the base. Because you are using larger base boards it will be difficult to tweak them to make a consistent line with the carpet if the floor is wavy. If the base is installed now, tight to floor, nice line at carpet/base intersection will result.

We always set the base off the floor by 3/8". This lets the carpet guys tuck the excess under the base and makes for a real clean looking installation. It also helps keep them from scratching the base trying to hide the cut edges between the wall and the tackless with those big GD chrome chisels they use. KC
