Jeff, have you tried angle for those bulkheads.  No notching and 1-5/8's stud.

      angle like how-so?

      In place of the track?

      while I'm asking Q's ... U talking about "L" shaped angle?

The "lotsa framing up there" bulkhead was a re-design .... after part was framed as per my norm ... build a standard wall with top and bottom track with studs as per the norm ...

the HO decided he'd really ... really like to "not" lose that 3.5 of headroom .... so we decided to build a series of short walls and just hand them from the ceiling ... the cross braces  ... notched studs ... held the outside walls plumb ... and made for easier shimming for "flatness" across the bottom of the bulkhead. Also helped with the fact some of the "walls" were close to 30" OC ... on either side of the HVAC ducts.

Walk me thru this angle thing ... I'm always looking for an easier way!

I make a short wall only with one plate (top track only) out of 1-5/8's metal stud/track.  Hang it from the joists or blocking.  Then I take an "L" angle (26 ga. also) and clamp it level to those dangling bulkhead studs.  Screw it off to the dangling studs.  So now you have the vertical part of the bulkhead in position, the angle acting as the bottom track.  I will temp brace it plumb to whatever doesn't move or get in the way.  I'll do the same on the other side of the ductwork I'm trying to hide.  Now I'll take 1-5/8" studs and span across from one side to the other and screw that to the "L" bottom track.  You'll know which way to lay that stud on the flat for maximum "no bend 'em".   You'll have to step layout over so they don't run into the other studs.  You can step over 1-5/8's and screw one to the other.   I'll sheet the bottom first, remove one side temp bracing and do that face, finish up on the other face.  With the 1-5/8's you can get closer to that you wish to hide and for holding board, is strong enough.

Did I make that cloudy enough for you?  This is another angle of what I'm trying to confuse you about.

We're giving 3 by the way.  And you know who will be there.  Being taken by a couple of terrible towell wavers............Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

          I'm with ya ...

That would be stronger .... giving up little head room.

I actually thought about the half studs when I was drawing this place in my head....

then got to framing everything with the 2x4's ...

That .. of course ... all that got changed around ... and focused on what stock was on hand ....

I shoulda stepped back and asked .. What would Cal do!

Hey .. there's always next time.

            Get outta here.

That's the name of the game in the basement, what a couple extra block on the foundation wouldn't do for headroom.

          Wait .. we don't have cheerleaders ...

          oh well ... sounds good.

I'll be at a little kids birthday party .... figuring out how to get all that loot back home ..... I'll have the option to stick glued to the screen ... or ignore the whole mess!

Live in Cleveland now, but  I will be in Toledo on Saturday.  Gonna watch the game at my brother's home in St. James Woods.   7051 Cannons Park if you want to stop by.  Off McCord between Central & Bancroft.

          1. calvin | Nov 22, 2003 01:40pm | #10

Well steve, if in that direction I'll turn in.  Thanks for the invite.  Browns tomorrow, you going to that one?  And Steve, better edit out the house number, could be alot of last minute showups.  Your brother might not like the company.

Jeff, amazing how quick the young guys fall by the wayside.  Thick or thin, that kind of thing.  3 you got.  On any given sunday......Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Punish the opponent ... screw those damn "trick plays" ... try a new trick ... like blocking and tackling ... maybe running up the gut once or a thousand time a game!

No rose colored glasses here ...

But I'll still drop a $20 spot ... remember ... I was willing to send ya more money last time!

I like to keep things simple ... this way I know I owe Cal $20 after each game ... and Mike takes the whole damn family to the Outback after each bet!
