basement floor finishing

My dearly beloved (?) wife has decided we need to stain and finish the basement floor. Does anyone have any advice how to go about this chore. The cement is only about 1 year old. Any advice will be helpful, and any reasonable offer of tool trade for the above mentioned wife will be considered!
