Here’s the first in what may be a slew of questions regarding an upcoming basement remodel.
This question is regarding building out a new bathroom in the basement. Specifically the shower.
The only other basement bath remodel I’ve done was the same situation, below ground basement, 7′ ceilings, slab floor. I’ve got the area laid out where the bathroom will go. The shower will be roughly 4′ x 3′ or so. I’m planning on sawing through the slab for the whole perimeter of the bathroom, and probably forming up stem walls where the shower will be, maybe even step a couple inches down into the shower to gain a little ceiling height.
So the question is whether I can build up a shower pan with just concrete rather than building a traditional shower pan with a liner, deck mud, etc. The shower will be tiled, floor and walls.
The other basement bathroom I worked on was just a concrete poured pan that we then built a floating slatted Ipe floor over (kind of Japanese bath style); water drained through the slats and down into the drain. But I want to make sure that there aren’t big problems down the road that I’m overlooking.
thanks
Paul
