I am hanging a panasonic bath fan in a bathroom where the ceiling is the bottom of the 8/12 roof joists. The instructions talk about mounting the fans directly to celing joists, and gave no indication that the unit had to be ONLY horizontal or vertical, but not sloped.
When I mounted it, the backdraft damper wouldn’t close fully, it hung open. I didn’t think it would be a problem because any wind blowing through the vent from the outside would close it the rest of the way. This turned out to not be true. I arrived after a windy snowstorm to find a small pile of snow on the floor under the fan, and the vent pipe was nearly full of snow.
Any suggestions for fixing this problem? I’d prefer to not build a small soffit/box that hangs down from the ceiling that keeps the unit horizontal, but that is the only solution I can come up with. It just doesn’t look very good. The pipe run to the roof vent is very short (6-12 inches) so there isn’t room for an other backdraft damper (like one of those “butterfly” dampers).
Thanks,
Rich

I just hung one like that theis morning! A really quiet Nutone one I like to use. 2x8 rafters; sloped ceiling.
I always use the vent hood kit that has its own little flapper in it - about $18 at Depot. I'll post a pic of the install this afternoon.

Or you could turn the unit around so the damper faces uphill..gravity holds the door closed..
Been there, done that.
I glued two pennies to a fan damper once with silicone to hold the damper closed. It must still work fine as I see the client regularily and if was a problem she would tell me.
Have a good day

The roof vent should contain a damper too. Otherwise that snow (and wind-driven rain) will just build up in the duct and melt.
not to mention what squirrels will do with that nice warm hole
