Hi
I am trying to install a bathtub grab bar in a partially renovated bathroom. There is tile over Wonderboard (concrete) and the stud finder is not giving good readings. The studs are also not on 16″ centres. Once you drill into tile… Any thoughts?
Thanks

Could you run the stud finder from the other side of the wall to determine the locations?
Hi Bill
Thanks for your suggestion. There is 3/4 pine wood panelling on the other side of the wall. I will try it. I am a little nervous about drilling from the backside of the tile, really don't want to retile the bathroom.
Thanks

You don't need to drill from the back side, just find out where the studs are so you can hit them when you drill from the tiled side.
Measure.
After you find the studs from the T&G side transfer the measurements to the tile side. Also, does the tile extend to the ceiling? If not you could pick up the stud locations there and transfer them down.
As a final aproach, get toggle bolts and drill oversized holes with a masonry bit thru the tile if all else fails. Then put the hole in place attach the toggle to the grab then push the toggle thru the wall. Install all then caulk and tighten.
PS use SS screws with the toggles so the finished side looks pretty.
PPS avoid the water pipes with the drill. Whenever I hit waterpipes loud screaming occurs.Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
Hi Booch
The tlie goes to the top.

There's a bar that has some fasteners that don't need a stud. I think FHB did a report on them within the last couple of years. Maybe Andy can give you the issue #.
I might have the web site at work, I'll look tomorrow.

Hi
Thanks
Some one suggested expandable anchor bolts. Only one shot with the tile and really don't want to re-do the surround
Thanks

There're a couple people on these boards I'd like to "kook" their posts! LoL! (You're not one of them...I just couldn't resist!)Jules Quaver for President 2004
Currently doing a bathroom for a handi cap kid in a wheel chair, we installed blocking all over the place for the grab bars but we had the luxury of having open walls, I would do what the other poster suggested and find the studs from the other side of the wall if the stud isnt where the grab bar needs to be I would cut out some of the drywall from the back side and install blocking
Hi CAG
Thanks for your thoughts. The backside of the wall is 3/4 " notty pine boards.

"The studs are also not on 16" centres."
The bars usually won't line up to the studs anyway. If there is no blocking look at this site,

Hi Barry
Thanks for reply. Had great trouble logging in again. Like the wingits site. It will probably end up being the solution
Thanks

Mac,
Barry E. gave you the address of a good website that details a first class hollow wall anchor for grab bars. The only problem with this anchor, Wingit, is that it only works with high quality commericial grab bars which have only one heavy duty fatener at each attachment point. Also the installation requires the drilling of a 1 1/4 inch hole in the tile in a location where a stud is not present. I recently installed some grab bars in bathrooms where tile did not go all the way to ceiling. Was able to locate studs above tile and transfer location down with level. The studs are usually plumb. The Zircon stud finder which I used gave good readings both through the drywall above the tile and through the tile itself. I used the "Deepscan" mode of operation when scanning on the tile.
Some houses in our area were framed on 20 inch centers years ago. Obviousally 18 inch grab bars which require three fasteners at each attachment point don't work too well in situations like these if a horizontal installation is desired. Use a vertical installation in such cases.
The bottom line is that there is some risk in installing grab bars where the loction of structural elements is uncertain. Everybody needs to understand that up front.
Hi Homewrite
Sorry for the delay in replying-had great trouble logging on.
The tile does got to the top. Will try a better stud sensor from pine panelled side, transfer the measurements to the bathroom side and if that doesn't work use the wingits solution.
