Bathroom Vanity Depth 21 vs 18

user-7103250 | Posted in General Discussion on September 14, 2020 12:51pm

We are planning our bathroom remodel and cannot decide if a 21″ deep vanity would feel too big in our 5×8 bathroom. We’re considering a vanity that can be made 18″ or 21″ deep and is only 30″ wide. We’re going to be doing a pocket door to maximize space, but will also have double towel bars that will protrude 5.5″ from the wall on the opposite side of the vanity. A 21″ vanity would give us about 32″ of open space between the counter edge and towel bar. Our place is only 650 sf, so we like to maximize storage where possible. Thank you!

How big are you and is the toilet on the same wall as the proposed vanity? Is this the long wall?

Is there a tub at the end and across the 5 ft wall?

One of our baths is 5 ft wide and 9’-6” long.
42” x 21” vanity, single sink. You need at least 18” from center of toilet to tub, counter, or wall.
Our tub is across the back at the end of the room.

It served our daughter well and no complaints from guests (I think).

The double towel bar we we don’t have. Have you thought of 2 bars one over the other? Towel rings for hand towels?

Mock up a cardboard cab/counter and see what that feels like. Do just the counter, tape it at the proper ht and prop it up with something. Do the same with your dbl bar and walk by it.

Just a guess but you may have to opt for a 30-36” cab at best. With the sink and plumbing you eat up a bunch of storage space. Some cab companies may offer a pull out toe kick (depending on drain location) drawer. Might store TP and less used items. Putting sink to one side might give tou usable drawers either side. In wall med cab for stuff you like to overfill so they fall out when they want. Over toilet cab so you remember to put the lid down.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the vanity is going on the long wall, followed by the toilet and shower. The vanity will be in the corner next to the wall with the 2' 4" pocket door.

We're looking at a 30" wide Strasser vanity. We would have room for a 36" and clearance around the toilet.

Good advice on the mock up. I would have done that earlier, but we have a tall cabinet in the corner where the vanity is going to go. Plus the door swings into the room, making it harder to visualize what a 21" vanity would like like (our current vanity is only 16").

We have two towel bars, one over the other right now, but they hide behind the door that we're getting rid of. We are planning on doing two double towel bars (we each like to have two towels and want to minimize the visual disruption, so the will be placed next to each other instead of stacked vertically.

We'll do a medicine cabinet above the vanity, and maybe a shelf above the toilet.

Well, I see you have this pretty well figured out!

If you can, cut up a cardboard “counter top” and remove from that what is now the corner cab. Use that to argue (Discuss) with each other The pros and cons of the deeper cab dimensions.

For further study, leave that up tonight and see if you run into it in the dark.

      Best of luck!

Edit: does Stasser have a 33” base cab?

I've made the mistake of making bath vanities not deep enough. It's nice to have a sink big enough to put your face in. Hardly the world's end though...

Thanks Calvin. Strasser only has 30" and 36" wide vanities, at least in the line we're interested in.

My wife and I are both not wide people, so I think the 21" depth might be okay for us.
