I need to replace a retaing wall (actually, 2) on a steep (12/12) slope. Currently, it’s two tiered walls, each about a foot high. I’d like to replace just the lower one with a single wall about three feet high. What’s the best choice? Digging will be very difficult in this particular location, but I recognize that I might have to pay some dues to get a lasting wall. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

the "best" would be the nicest looking one if you have to look at it everyday!
Other than that....any properly built wall should hold up fine. 3 ft isn't real tall....but it is reaching the limits of a wall w/o sleepers or retaining fabric or some sort. So some digging back would be needed. Landscape timbers or concrete blocks...the manufacturer should have all ther accessories needed.
Don't be like my neighbor that rebuilds his short wall(about 4 ft tall) every other year...take the time to do it right...and just do it once. Jeff

Check out the "stone" like blocks they come in diffeernt sizes and shapes. Some of the literature claims you can go to 4 ft without engineering. many different to choose from. don't have any urls handy. often location dependent because blocks are expensive to transport. Ideal Block has some pattans I think they may have a site.
