best way to replace shakes/shingles

I have some cedar shake siding and need to replace some of them. What is the best method to secure the new ones? I was thinking about holding them in place and using a staple gun to shoot up under the top shake. Are fastners need or can PL400 be used to secure them?

Hold the new shake about a 1/2" low and use a stainless steel pair of nails nailed just below the upper course's lower edge. Then gently tap the new shake up until the nails are now hidden.
Obviously don't nail overtight, nor too large a nail.

I have used this method for years it's a good one, but make sure the nails go in at an angle so you don't have to fight it on the way up.
