best wood & finish for exterior shutters
My front door is made from Sapele and I would like to match my exterior shutters to the Sapele color. I am told that making my shutters out of Sapele might not be the best way to go. Most of what I see in a natural finish is a red cedar, stained to whatever color is desired. I am wondering what is the best wood and finish to use in this application. Any thoughts are welcome? I really like the look of the Sapele door and would like to use the same wood for the shutter.

Isn't sapele very similar to mahogany, just a little darker? Mahogany will make good shutters, and you can stain it to look pretty close. use a high uv protection exterior varnish to finish and they should last a good long time.

Meet me at House & Builder!
FWW did a good article on exterior finishes in different geographical areas of the US. Seems the best and most durable finish was 3 coats of Smith & Co. Penetrating Epoxy sealer, then five coats of Epifanes Marine Varnish.
I've never used either, just commenting on the article. Might want to go over there and check it out.
Sikiens, full stop.
Thanks, Ill Look into it.
