Not sure where they come from. Vac-ed them all up and now a week later they are back. Thought it might be mice but traps are untouched? Any ideas?

When deck posts exceed what the prescriptive code tables allow, it's time to consult a structural engineer for post sizing and possible bracing.

Might be a dead body somewhere in the framing or other out-of-the-way place. The flies lay eggs on the body at different times and they all don't hatch at the same time to form maggots. The development from maggot to adult fly takes another week to ten days so new flies will appear for quite some period of time, a month or so. Eventually the body will decompose to the point that flies no longer lay eggs on it and, at that point, your problem should resolve itself.
Well I hope it's not a human! I've had them since I moved in (three and a half years ago) and they have never bothered me but the house is on the market now and it isn't a great selling point. I looked all over for mice or a squirel but can't find anything and no smells. They seem to gather at two of the three windows and the most I have ever seen at once is 7-8. They just always seem to be there? My girlfriend is convinced that they are a sign of gosts and deamons. Kind of freeks me out also ya know...

I believe you have cluster flies (attic flies). http://www.caes.state.ct.us/FactSheetFiles/Entomology/fsen018f.htm
Thanks for that link. They are driving me nuts up North.
I prefer my flies browned, regardless whether you serve them in the attic or the kitchen.
You have cluster flies, they are a seasonal problem in most old houses and some newer ones.

Thanks to that have replied and I now know what they are. For the most part they are a PIA more then anything else, but how do you get rid of them? There is no way that I am going to "seal" my 1915 house as described in the link. Any other ideas?
My wife is a housekeeper on wealthy estates, some of which have had 'experts' in to try top deal with this. once they move in, I don't believe there is any way to be rid of them

Nip upstairs & vac them when a showing is due...you might want a dedicated dustbuster that you keep right handy!
