I’m thinking of removing my old gas fireplace burner and making my own. I was told I could go to Home Depot and purchase regular black iron pipe off the shelf in the size that I need, and elblow on the new pipe. My thought is to buy an 18 inch piece and elbow on from the stub that is already sticking out from the firebox using pipe dope on the threads of course and cappng the end. I’ll drill small holes down the length of the 18 inch pipe for the new flame. Is this safe? Do I need a some kind of black flow device?

If you only intend to use this for a log lighter then this is ok. If you want it to burn continuosly you'll be wasting gas. To get more heat you need a venturi to mix air with the gas before it burns. I've made a couple of burners with jets and venturi, but it's tricky. In case you want to make your own burner here's a size chart for the orifices.
