Client want s a simple blackboard. I suspect I can get the paint at Sherwin Wms, but what type of plywood should be used?
I’m sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

What about hardboard. Or maybe MDO. I think that you want something very smooth.
And is this for a kids room? I ask because there are also "magnetic" paints that will allow you to also use magnetic letters, refigerator magnets and the like.
Masonite, 1/4" over layed on 1/2 MDF. Stays flatter.

Ok, do you spread a layer of yellow glue and staple around the edges?
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

Would your clients agree to a board that takes "dry-erase" markers rather than chalk? If so, you can just put up a sheet of that shiny white sheet good that I only know as Abitibi.
The fumes from dry erase markers are harmful. I wouldn't allow regular use by kids.
Wha?
They haven't aff, aff, affected mmeeeee at all. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
Just as a fyi, there is blackboard _fabric_ now. Saw it at the fabric store. Doesn't seem that practical, but you never know. I can imagine sheets and pillows from it, and the fun one could have with sidewalk chalk.
Spending a lot of time in fabric stores now are we? (G) Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
Yeah...got a problem with that, Butch?<G>This particular reason for being there was finally doing the window seats for the utility chase upstairs. Wrapping the osb in foam and fabric, just like a chair seat. Tried sewing them, but took too long. Staples working great. Gives the rooms a finished feel.
LOL...
I wouldn't know a finished feel if it hit me up side the head.
3M 77 spray glue works real good too for fabric. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
Lowes sells a piece of 1/4" masonite with a green finish on one side, made by GP, intended as a chalkboard, and at 32x48 it's the right size. So I bougfht it and a nice piece of 1/2" birch ply. Then I read the note here about the whiteboard. Dang, wish I'd thought of that. Asked the client ... nope, make it a chalkboard ... that way the kiddies are less likely to use markers on the adjacent painted walls.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
yeah, now ya mention it...I remember that. Good deal for ya! Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Warn them that the blackboard paint doesn't perform exactly like a real blackboard. They get cloudy fast and are tough to clean. You might find black-board sheet goods (which is a coated particle board product in a frame) at an educational supply house.
I'd go for real slate. Less expensive than you might think. Here's a Google search to get you started.

Spray blackboard stuff is at a paint store. Use that you don't want to brush it.
I used masonite and made a frame afterward with a wooden chalk tray. It lasted thru my 3 boys and their bratty friends that took to it with crayons. (crayons =kiss of death)
If it is a school there is probably some reason to use Nomex with an aluminum coat for a substrate but if it is a home project use the 1/4" masonite. PS use chrome flathead screws with the little shoulder washer to hold it to the support or studs. Looks just like a school.
