It looks from their web page that you can blind nail hardie plank directly to osb on 12″ nail spacing disregarding studs. Seems questionable but it sure would make things alot simpler. Wadda think? Is it sound?

Make sure you use ring shank nails and I don't see a problem.
*I attended a Hardie Plank mini-seminar on site last year. The Hardie rep assured me that nailing to osb, without hitting the studs, is good enough and they will warrant the product. He said roofing nails were good enough. No staples however. We actually did start nailing some of the gables like that. It worked fine. We still hit the gable studs which typically are spaced 24"oc. blue
*Yeah it sounds easier but hitting the studs does make for "fine homebuilding". Go the extra effort and produce a little quality to keep yourself above the hacks and bums.Hardie Plank, Cemplank et al is heavy stuff. I've hung a bit of it and I would definitely hit studs if it were my house or a customer of mine.Pete
*In my experience with Hardi-plank (et al), nailing into the studs gives the nails extra bite (duh!), which translates into pulling the bottom edge of the plank in tight to the lower previous one. When you nail willy-nilly (I've been dying to use that), the edge has more of a tendency to gap out away from the lower plank, which is not a big deal, but tight overlaps do look alot better. Of course, you can suck those up with an occasional facce nail or two, but then it wouldn't be blind. the rev
*I met an SOB this morning that I' sure like to nail to some Hardi Plank....Oh, sorry. I see you're talking about Hardi Plank nailed to OSB....Oh well...James
*please, you're kidding, right?you need to have one synaptic firing for every senco firing. this is a basic principle, that applies to everything you do. even rolling out the cords and hosesthe easy way is seldom the easiest way
