I bought one of these Bostich framing guns with the slick metal connecting nose a couple weeks ago. The plan was to use it exclusively for fastening hardware and let the Hitachi’s continue to carry the brunt of the framing work.
I can’t seem to get nails anywhere. My nail guy (New Hampshire Tool) has been telling me for 3 weeks that, “they’re coming in this week”. Today I took a ride over to the other big tool store to by my harness equipment and they told me all they stock are the ones that fit the Paslode and the Hitachi strap-tite. They don’t deal Bostich, and neither he or I knew whether or not the nails for the Bostich were the same as the ones for the Paslode and Hitachi.
Any one know what the deal is? Will the Paslode brand hardware nails fit this Bostich? It was a 45 min ride and close to $75 for the case of nails, so I didn’t want to chance it, but he said he’d deliver ’em to me if I knew they’d fit the gun.
Help.

There's a nail place in Watertown by the Home Depot and I think Starrett lumber carries a whole bunch of different types if you want to give them a call. Not sure of the specifics on your gun though. There's a nail place near my woodshop in Leominster that carries everything under the sun if you are still out luck on them I can grab a box next time I'm over there.

Senco... there's another option...thanks.

i bet they have a salesman in your areaMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I didn't even think of them.... I remember 'em from JLC though. Thanks
Ray,
thanks for the info and your kind offer. I'm going to see what I can dig up.
I've gotten several cases of Bostich hanger nails for my gun at the local HD. They had to order them, and BTW, they ain't cheap. But they work.
Yeah, I remember paying around $100 a case for galvys when I had the Paslode....OUCH. Thanks for the info.
I'm in the same situation as you. I don't really need the metal connector deal, but thought it would be nice. Checked around locally and found no nails. Found some on the web, but they sere gaud awful expensive. Plus, I may be wrong, but I don't think they sell the joist hanger nails in Hot Dipped, which is mainly what I want. I sent an E-mail to Bostitch customer service and got back some lip service and that was it. Whatever... I mostly like it as a framing gun so I'm happy enough.
matt.... the bostich nails are coated for the new ACQ .. matter of fact... Bostich has a lot of nails rated for ACQ now..
the new IRC code has added about a $1000 worth of metal connectors to some of our houses... a positive placement gun is almost a must.. unless your labor cost is zipMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I'm thinking your are in a costal and/or high wind zone. IRC did not effect us that way here in centeral NC. Once I have a project that I can charge it to, I'll look around for the nails again. Matt
I just recently went through the same problem - lumber yard said they didn't have any and couldn't tell me when they would be there. Tried a few places and finally found a source.
Two items - FIRST - the nails that Bostitch provides for hangers are HARDENED. I was not able to find 1 1/2 inch 8D or 10D nails anywhere but through Bostitch. These nails are hardened to eliminate problems with minor contact with the metal hangers. I certainly would not use any nails in the gun for hangers that were not hardened based upon my experience.
SECOND - make sure you wear eye protection. On my job with about 100 hangers, I found about 4 nails didn't make it and had the potential to bounce back at you.
If you are interested, I still have about 3/4 of a box of the Bostitch Nails (not galv.) as this was interior work
(I am in Northen MA and go up to Concord NH on a regular basis)

Hey Ron,
Thanks for the tips. I've owned other postive placement nailers in the past, and yer right, those occasional richochets do keep you on your toes. I've gotten really good in the past year or so about wearing safety glasses just about all the time at work. What made the glasses use start to stick was buying a couple of decent pairs of them instead of just the usual throw-aways. I bought a shaded pair and a yellow pair so I don't have any excuse regardless of weather. The more expensive ones are more comfortable and I tend to wear em more.
If you get a minute, email me through the forum and let me know where "northern" MA is. I head up 495 towards Westford/Lowell area to visit with the rest of the family every other weekend or so. If the logistics work out easily I'll gladly throw you some coin for your nails....can't ever have too many nails!
Thanks again,
Brian
I'm not a huge fan of this gun, but today we used it and some 3 1/2" x .162" nails to attach rafters to a 2x12 ridge board. I tried pulling one of those nails and couldn't, but the gun had no problem driving them.
The gun has a lot of punch... Sometimes, almost too much as it jars you a bit. I remember Tools of the Trade or one of those tested framing guns. If I remember correctly one of the things they rated the guns on was operator comfort. Bostich was not one of the leaders...
I love it though compared to some - like an old PC I had... what a POS - I called it the "$300 nail starter"... The nose piece fell off it one day, and rather than messing around with fixing it, I sold it in our yard sale for $15. Matt
Recoil, the gun was downrated in a recent article due to recoil. And I know why, the thing can kick. Often I'll get in a rhythm of bouncing the gun and pulling the trigger when the nose hits just to compensate. Don't always work though, because... WHITE MAN AIN"T GOT NO RHYTHM!!!
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Try Adams Tool & Nail in Leominster, MA, they might have the nails in stock.
