The plan : vaulting a ceiling in a master Brm.
The questions: how would you guys brace the pony wall I have to
build to receive the new elevated (4/12) joists ?
Things I no not to do: remove all the old ceiling joist before
the new are placed and braced
Just want to compare notes with the rest of the pros out there.
Thanks

Very Interrrresting.
New joists sit on ponywall. Pony wall sits on old wall. So do existing joists.
Does the house have structural exterior sheathing? Others may (probably) have better ideas, but. If the sheathing is there, I would put temp collar ties in 4'OC, remove the existing ceiling, cut the top plates as needed, sister in full new height studs 4'OC, and frame in between them with the rest of the ponywall. Block under the floating ends of the cut plates.
Make the 4' spaced new joists land on the new full length studs.
If the sheathing is not there, then I know nothingk.

The bearing interior wall runs parrallel to the roof ridge and is on my side(being the Brm) of the ridge by a foot or so.
I'm thinking(that might be a mistake) running the pony wall up to a plate on the underside of the rafters, which should kill the tendancy for heaving the out side wall by supporting the down load of the roof framing on my side of the ridge.
I would block between the ceiling joist (doubled) to give me a solid bottom plate attachment. I think then I should be able to remove my existing ceiling joist.
I thought I might use simpson ties at a ledger run horizontally on the pony wall to attach the new plumb cuts at the joist head, and solid block between rafter tails and simson tie the joist tails to the blocking at that point, or ever third joist could marry to the side of a rafter and then block between and fill in with shortened joist.
throw in a purlin on top of the new joist to the underside of the roof rafters.
reattach some crippled collar ties to the opposite side of my pony wall to the opposite side rafters.
and what ever ad libs might come to mind during construction.

Lots of triangles = Good
The new cieling joist at at "A" can sit on top of the plate and not have a tail.
All the circled connections are in extreme tension. They can not be allowed to pull apart.
You need an engineer.
Oops! shoulda circled the connection at the left hand wall/joist/rafter.SamT
No oops - that and A are vectors rather than triangles, but your conclusion still valid.Carry on
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
In Shadetree 101 they teach that if you replace vectors with structural members, you can't go too far wrong.
How...ever,
If I was engineering that, I have to do it like Frenchy.
If I was building it, I'd want to see stamped drawings.SamT
