Brad Nailer break down

Heck | Posted in Tools for Home Building on June 21, 2006 03:58am

My DeWalt 2″ brad nailer crapped out on me today.
It is jamming constantly, the driver looks OK, but it is shearing off the leading edge of the head of the brad.

Once it does this, it  will not fire again.

I have never been all that fond of this nail gun, so I am looking for suggestions for a replacement.

What are y’all using?

I've got the Senco 2" brad gun, which I've been fairly happy with.

It sometimes has a problem setting nails in very hard woods like maple.

I've got the Senco also... no complaints..

file the bottom of the driver square... may help...

Been using two 18 ga. makita brad guns for over 15 years.  Like them so much I hate it when I have to use something else.

Good power, adj. depth, adj. exhaust, belt hook, won't fire when empty,  rarely jambs, driver leaves no mark. Neither gun has ever needed repair...   Buic

I too have the Senco 2".

Five years now, constant use.  Good gun.   Get a Max if ya can.

PC 16 guage straight.  My most used finish nailer.

Lots of Sencos out there. I have had other sencos for years, love 'em.

I am interested in the makita now, and when I looked around, I found a package deal on the makita brad nailer and 'hot dog' compressor for $261 at toolbarn.com

      Tempting. Very tempting.

James, I've got the senco pro 25 I think is the name.  5/8-2-1/8.  Have had it in for a ring change/seal once.  They did it as warranty work.  Nice nailer.  Reg and Turbo feature.  No problem putting nails through hardwood.  Depth adjustment I don't need to mess with.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

That gun is one of the two that I use. The compressor is the newer version of my mac 500 that I've had for many years. ( although the 500 is oil-less and the 700 is oiled )

Both work like the day I bought them.

I'd buy that package in a minute if mine disappeared...Buic

I bought the oil free Ridgid a few months ago, and no complaints.

I've had bad luck with newer Sencos.

    Schools out for summer.

I was looking at the Ridgid 18ga. Seemed to have nice balance and weight. Won't fire when out of nails... are you using it alot?May neighbors respect You, and troubles neglect You.

Not daily, but 2-3 times a week for kitchen crown/toe kicks.  No problems so far after about 6 months or so.

I'm gonna break my I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

LoL, all brad guns ('cept the one you kinda really don't like) always eventually "break."

That's your sign you need to go get a new tool.

('Course other signs for getting new tools include, sun rising in east; days ending in "y"; "just 'cause", etc. . . . )

Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

I have the Hitachi - shoots up to 2 inches and I like it. Only other gun I have ever used however is the Central Pneumatic.

They have a three year warranty, and I don't think they've been out for more than three years.

If it was a case of they didn't have the 3 year warranty when you bought it, I might be inclined to re-purchase and perform a little bit of self-induced customer satisfaction.

I was interested to hear the problem because I recently picked up the Dewalt 16 finish and 18 2" brad gun - they had them in a kit at HomeDepot for $159 with a bag and glasses.

Not much of a Dewalt guy, but the guns seem to have great ergonomics and balence compared to my PC 18 brad and my Paslode 16 gun.

Specifically, the super quick depth of drive adjust allows me to shoot a few proud nails quickly when I need to shim out some baseboard quickly, whereas with another gun, it't not be worth the time neeeded to adjust it out and back again - you might instead use a drywall screw proud quicker.

    Good luck with yours,

    Julian

Got a little time between meetings today, will be breaking down the DW in a while to see if I can fix myself.

Repair options are limited and slow, could be pricey as well...so if no can fix myself, will probably buy another, maybe that makita.

Well, no makita for me for now.

I took the DW apart yesterday and found a bent driver.

I bent it back to straight with my fingers and lightly filed the tip flat.

After reassembly, it works like new. New driver (just in case) will be ordered soon.

So I guess I will have to get some other tool I need.

        Can't win 'em all!

Luckily for you, I'll bet that driver's fatigued, probably won't last another job...LOLFWIW, among others, I've got a Bostich that takes oil and up to 2" pins, and cost about 100 bucks...But, the Senco SLP20 is my go to gun I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
