Hello my name is Eugene. I live in Southern California. I would like to build a brick spiral column to cover a steel support column. Does anyone have suggestions regarding how to approach this? Or any suggestions regarding books or online sources to consult? Thank you.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you post this over in the construction Tech. section you'll get a lot more responses.
When you started your thread you had the option of what section you wanted it in, choose construction tech.
Oh, BTW, welcome to BT

Thank you very much Doug, I appreciate the advice. Will do. Eugene
I see its been moved

Ok, so, I'll ask--whachya mean "brick spiral"?
Are you thinking of stacking the bricks in a "skewed" bond pattern that would follow the column "around"?
Or, are you thinking of a final shape for the bricks that would be spiral?
Might help if you told us what shape metal column you are bricking around.
Might be all you are asking about is making a brick surround that's 1.5 bricks square (on long, one turned 90º to the end of that one). After you staggered the joints, it'd have a bit of a spiral effect, showing 8-4, 8-4, 8-4, etc.
To me, the words he used would indicate a running bond that spirals onto itself ascending like the ramped exterior of the Babylonian towers, but that would be a disastor to trey to build. He must just mean a round column.

Sp Piff, did you work on that tower?

Is this the voice of experience?

you've heard of the multitude of languages that came out of there? They developed from my spelling and typ[ing errors...;)Actually noit just that one tower, there were dozens - if not hundreds of ziggaruts in that area.

I have seen some pics , either here, or in my imagination of twisted chinmneys..They are actually making a helix at the corners.
Gee, I hope "twisted chimnys" don't get me banned from this thread. LOL. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
You've probably seen photos of the columns in I think it's St. Pauls in the Vatican or maybe it's the Cistine Chapel. Anyway, they are like fat snakes running floor to ceiling with a helix, like a lock of curly hair that has been pulled tight. (Sorry about the mixed metaphor.) Would look cool if he could do that in brick!

Yeah, that's what I was getting, thus the question.
I've seen some spirals of brick, built up as columns before, just not with a steel column within.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
I'll try to get a pic of this very tall, and very old chimney stack in my neighborhood that is spiral brick. I can't imagine how that thing has lasted all these hurricanes-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
