I have a 1905 redwood framed bungalow in northern california. The hip roof spans 22 feet in the short direction and is 7′ high on the interior at the ridge (the other dimension of the roof plan is 39 feet). It is framed with redwood 2×4 rafters (actual 2×4 dimension) on 32″ centers and has a sheathing of furring strips, wood shakes, and asphalt shingles on the outside. Several of the long rafters are broken near the middle and need to be replaced. I’d like to make a repair and, in the process, insulate the roof. I’m planning to use the attic for a play room and storage, so I’d like to insulate in the rafters rather than the ceiling joists.
My thought is to replace the rafters using 2x6s on 16″ centers then put batt insulation between. Is it possible to install the new rafters without dismantling the roof (budget is not available for such a task)? Will I compromise the attic ventilation if I fill in between the rafters (currently venting is through cracks in the eaves)?
Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.
