I’m new at this forum, so please bear with me… Some time ago I saw an article in a magazine (not Taunton) about building a dumbwaiter that was powered by a garage door opener. Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas on this concept? What size motor would be required for this device.. should I add counterweights….

Shouldn't have to use counter weights for most applications. Pulley sizes should be adjusted to handle the weight required for such a light duty application.
The average car travel would only be between 8 and 9 feet for a residence. A simple shaft, a box open on one side, suspended on the drive mechanism's pulley and the start stop switches, top and bottom. Manual on switches on both levels and you're in business.
What a fun project.
*Gabe, any idea where to get plans for a project like this? I want to build something similar, except far more tacky: I'd like to have a box, of sorts, that runs up thei outsideof the back of my house (where it can't be readily seen), in order to put a laundry basket in it/on it, and pull it up to the second floor. Any ideas? Thanks! Patty
*Hi Patty,There must be some, but I really don't know where. This is the kinda stuff you would find in old popular mechanics mags. Take out the old drafting paper and schetch it out first. It's all a matter of deciding on a size required, (24x24)?, in your case, the size to hold a laundry basket, with an 1" or two to spare. Load would be less than 50lbs. So you would build a shaft, to accomodate this, open face at the top and bottom, simple pulley system, on a crank to start, later you could add a small motor, I don't think it would be too hard a project, sure would be interesting, Give it a try.
*Thanks, Gabe! I like the idea of the small motor! Hmmm... maybe I could ride, too.If my daddy was still alive, he'd come over and build it for me; he was an old-time apprenticed tool and die maker who could build anything. I remember when he built an elevator in ouri one-storyhouse, that came up from a small half-basement, just for fun - cool!Patty
