the house we are about to buy has been lived in by an indoor smoker for the last 15 years – luckily no carpet to deal with – any ideas on getting rid of the stink?

Just paint the whole house with oil primer , and then your choice of top coat .

White shellac primer will not dissapoint you--but open the windows!Close enough for government work
After that long it will be "stuck" on any surface. Painting all surfaces and removing any carpet (you said there is none though).
After that if anything remains a cup of white vinegar stashed in the room and replaced periodically has been known to work as well.

I hear those ozone machines work wonders for smoke smells, but they can be pricey.
hire a professional cleaning crew and pay the going rate for smoke smell removal. If it's that pervasive, call a fire restoration company as ask if they have a light duty crew.
I'd clean as much out before I sealed the rest in. You gotta live there......I'd spend a buck to make my life easier and more comfortable in the long run. Jeff.......Sometimes on the toll road of life.....a handful of change is good.......
Been there done that.
Removed and replaced all floor coverings, cleaned all cabinets, countertops, windows and fixtures. Repainted ceilings, and walls including closets. This approach was very successfull for myself and my wife who is very sensitive to smells.
