howdy all.
anyone have ideas or have done horizontal cable railings? the only ones I’ve seen are with eye bolts each end, turn buckle, and looping 3/16 cable and secureing with cable clamps. looking for something different and unique.
thanks

There's a constant source of clean water for you to use, and all you have to do is collect it.

I've used these guys a few times--it's a good system.
thanks Mike

Same here, cablerail.com. I recently bought 7 pre-cut cables for a 14' steel frame that I had made (with input from the cablerail guy on the tubing sizes and spacing), along with the color caps for the ends. Very slick, very clean, no turnbuckles or anything like that. Not cheap either, but whaddya gonna do?
believe it or not... they have all the fittings and cable at Harbor freight... galv & stainless... they have the fittings that grab the cable vs loop N clamp

They look cool but they are unique cause they really dont meet code.
Horizontial rails create a ladder for the tykes to climb and fall to their death.
Having said that, Grosse Pointe Farms city hall has a four story staircase with the horizontial rails all the way up.
Family.....They're always there when they need you.
good point MSA1
Lowes sells the SS Cable but you cannot get the super fance terminal connectors there. 45 cents a foot for SS 3/8 in cable.
Never heard of them not meeting code. The only code I've read is that they not pass a 4" sphere through any part of the opening. Never heard of restrictions associated w/ ballasters being horizontal or any other configuration.
I've seen this stuff used a LOT on both residential and commercial applications. Maybe you use a different code or have local restrictions?
While your point about ladder climbing is interesting, it's a stretch IMO. I think that codes have historically never restricted design to prevent or discourage that type of thing. You could say the same about stair railings that tend to be w/in saddling reach and tempting for people to slide down them.
I believe the 2006 IRC allows horizontal railings.
A stretch? You got any kids? Ever been one? Seen any?
I dont know what your experiences have been but my 5 will climb anything that wont climb them first.
You're right. I just looked in my code book and cant find any restriction about vertical or horizontial.
Thanks

I didn't mean a stretch for kids actually doing it ... I was referring to the intent of the code. Your point of view is well taken, though. Another couple of years they will ban them too ... and it will be your fault! :)
Better buy them now then.:>)
Maybe they'll name the code after me.

Only now catching up on things I've missed on Breaktime - winter settling in here in the Northeast - much to do before it does for real.
Check out this website:

Company is here in CT, but they actually supply much of the product that Feeney (http://www.cablerail.com) uses on its custom assemblies. These fittings have more finesse and interest than the basic Feeney quick-connect system.
The folks at Johnson can refer you to a rigger local to you who can make up the cables for you.
Good luck.
Check with the local building department regarding code compliance of horizontal cables.
I've heard that some JHA's don't allow them at all - and some allow them in commercial buildings but not residential.
