if a load-bearing post is placed over a header, how far along the header can it be cantilevered from the nearest post supporting the header? an FHB issue a couple of years ago quoted that you can cantilever a load bearing wall away from the wall below by only as much as the width of the joists – does this rule hold true for headers as well? am I making any sense? specific situation: front porch – due to utility lines, the pier at one end has to be placed 17″ closer in than desired; I don’t want to lose the 17″ of porch width – if I hang the beam 17″ past the pier, is it OK to cantilever the post supporting the roof on this beam 17″ past the pier, or am I limited to 9 1/4″ (the width of the 2×10 beam)?

You are talking abou a point load that should transfer directly to foundation unless designed by an engineer assessing the entire situation. This is not one for trusting to free internet advice.
