I am a 35 yr old professional who is in the beginning research for a major career change. I am currently the QA Manager for a large (500 employee) manufacture. I have worked my way up from an hourly machine operator to the position I have now. I have served duties as Engineer, Quality Engineer, Applications Engineer, Product Manager (Marketing) in addition to my current responsibilities. I am clean cut, loyal, and have an outstanding work ethics
My goal is to gravitate to the construction industry with eventual specialization in trim work. The state of Georgia has recognized my county (about 80 miles north of Atlanta) as one of the top ten growth areas for the next decade. I am a third generation wood worker (as John Prine said “Grandpa was a carpenter”), and have a fully equiped garage hobby shop. I already have somewhat of a reputation in the county for consignment furniture. My long term goal is within five years being a self-employed trim sub.
My first question is: What would be the best way to get the most experiance? My thoughts are either finding the best cabinet shop and trying to get a job as an installer. Spend a couple of years learning that side of the trade and then finding a good contractor to work with and learn the other parts. Or, starting with a contractor and go from there.
My second question is for anyone in this geographical area. What could I expect in beginning wages? Understanding that what I lack in experiance I make up for in drive and ambition. I know I will have to take a pay cut, but can I realistically expect to be making my current salary (~$40M yr) after five years.
My last question is for everyone. Would you hire me? Again, someone with no practical experiance, but with a proven track record in abilities.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
