Happened across an Occupational Safety and Health website recently
http://infoventures.com/osh/abs/wood0005.html
It contained results of a study done by that agency pertaining to illnesses that seem to be more common among carpenters/wood workers.
It found significantly higher rates of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, thyroid, prostate, bone, brain, breast and lungs among this group.
For 118 female carpenters, only cancer of the brain was significantly elevated. (that explains it, in my case, anyway)
I don’t know how much wood dust I’ve swallowed or breathed through the years, but at least 10 lbs.,and don’t know how many hours I’ve spent using electric drills, saws routers, all which produce EMFs, exposure to which has been tentatively linked to some cancers…
Any body have any thoughts on this, or think this is bunk?

They put sawdust in some breads for filler
i'm not sure how they get mortality rates. All carpenters ( and carpentinas) are mortal except for one carpenters son

I am walking very far away from that comment.
Jen, if I add anything, the work I do is very much the glue that keeps me together. I already lived longer than I ever thought I would. Everything now is a bonus.
My other options were to become one with a cubicle, and that would be death warmed over for me.
About EMFs, anybody ever heard that people, livestock, plants have problems when they spend a lot of time near high power lines? This is my high school understanding of it...
When an electrical current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is produced. An armature, like the one in your power saw, drill etc. is made of wire wrapped around a core that spins around when power is supplied. Some scientists believe that this magnetic field tampers with the body's own electrical impulses...causing mutation at a genetic level that induces cells to reproduce flawed. Other researchers say, "No way that EMFs cause cancer" which probably means they're funded by the Electric Cos., who would have a thousand lawsuits filed against them if there were absolute proof that they do cause health problems.
Any of the Docs or Profs that read this forum believe one way or the other?
Thanks, Jennifer

Not a hunter myself but was working with a guy that was telling me they've been finding an increase in doe with partial antlers and testicles. Stuff like that and all the chicken reports tempts me to go veggie. Half of good livin' is staying out of bad situations.
It is my understanding that the EMF scare was based on a flawed study and that subsequent studies failed to show any correlation between EMF and sickness/mortality.
Just another media hyped phantom phenomena.

You guys scare the shat outta me. Runaway belt sanders, air nailed digits, chronic chronics. But the closest thing I'll ever settle with a desk job is maybe building one. Half of good livin' is staying out of bad situations.
I've had my chronic cough since growing up with a haze of cig smoke down to here in our house, so I never connected it to workplace dust untill recently. Taking an antibiotic for sinus infection right now, my second one in lifetime. I really notice the dust lately though.
On the EMF thing, I know it's hard to find objective evidence and I don't believe it's a bad enopugh thing to make that much difference in ones health overall, it has to be of some effect. I always sleep more soundly with an east west alignment and I never get lost in the woods. Watches don't last on me and I can't get an accurate reading with a compass unless I set it on a stump and step back as far as I can. My body can make a small needle swing as much as 13-14°.
They have also found that extremely bad bone fractures(multiple pieces) can be healed better with a device that induces a field arounbd the bone. Minerals especially in our bodies have electrical charges which help with bondage. the charged field increases the speed of alignment of calcium particles in the protein tissues/collogen that begins the repair process.
So its not all bad stuff, we live in a huge magnetic field..

I had a little pain and lost the feeling in the fingers of my right hand a couple years ago. The doctor thought something in my chest was pinching a nerve so she ordered a chest x-ray. Scared the hell out of her. She's a young Dr. and never seen a "buckshot" chest( something the breathing Dr.s call someone with spotty lungs). They actually called me about it. (Some of these HMO'S let you make appointments, follow up phone call's etc). Scared the hell outa me too. I quit smoking some years ago, I guess if I'm not careful the plaster dust, lead, asbestos, mold, and every thing else in construction will do me in. Which reminds me, I'm due for another x-ray next month.
Took me about 10 years to figure out I should be wearing dust masks and earplugs...I have kind of a chronic cough and tell my kids to yell if they want me to hear em. I've had 2 metal splinters removed from my eyes from cutting bolts or rebar without goggles, it's such a pain in the butt to wear them.
Kind of convenient when I want to have "selective hearing"
Glad to hear you're taking better care of yourself...I've heard that quitting the tobacco is one of the best moves you can make
BTW, In high school we used to sing that song "Panama Red" but I can't remember who by...
Did you hear that recently in Nevada a bill was on the ballot to legalize possession of a small amount for personal use? I lost track of what happened with that one...becoming more of a possibility now that boomers (one myself) have more political clout. Read about a study last week, researchers now say it probably isn't a gateway drug...good news for people sick of the hypocrites saying how bad the green is, while idiots are busy getting drunk and running over pedestrians in crosswalks, etc.
Don't get me started!

about a billion.
Only real danger I could see in legalizing it...Americans would be too laid-back to defend themselves against invasion. Whatever, man...
If this ticks any conservatives off, get a life, spend some time with your family instead of the computer...

I'm a libertarian conservative.
There was a time when I smoked my supply but it doesn't do me anymore and I don't do it anymore. When my wife was doing cancer treatments, I was looking for it. It has a place. God gave us every herb of the field for a purpose and time. I'm not against legalizing it but not for it either, but if you come on my job stoned, you are going home again.
The stoners screw up more, make mistakes that cost money to fix, and occasionally fail to be safe, putting everyones life in jeapardy.
The effects last at least three days, in terms of mental accuity. You guys are only fooling yourselves, just like a drunk who says he can still drive when he can't even talk right. sorry but fact's fact!.

I haven't for at least 20 years...seem to recall it makes you pretty stupid at the time, somewhat recovered myself...
Point is, you can carry enough vodka around in your trunk to give alcohol poisoning to a football team, that's ok, but can do jail time for having a small amount of MJ in your car. A router table and any kind of intoxication don't work for me, either

Can you speak up a little, please?
While were're at it I'll be going deaf too, the ear muff's and ear plugs mufflew the noise alittle, I really should cut this long, greazy hair so they work better. Ten years ago at company meetings I sat all the way in the back so I didn't have to hear the boss'es bs, now I grab a mudbucket and sit in front with my good ear facing the speaker, which reminds me, I 'm due for another session with the audiologist next month.
In Canada, the wood trades for years were statistically the most dangerous occupations....got bumped last year or the year before, I think, by commercial fishermen. You have falls, accidents with tools, accidents from moving wrong etc, plus exposure to chemicals. Personally, I have: a chronic cough, that gets pretty bad sometimes (from wood dust and working in spray booths before I got smart (er) about protective equipment), some carpal tunnel syndrome, and sinus disease with accompanying headaches ....need to reschedule some surgery to try and work on that, and rebuild my nose....problems with one shoulder, from humping 100 lb sheets on and off saws.... some hearing loss...there's more too that I'm forgetting. Not complaining, I'm in pretty good shape compared to lots of guys I know, but at 37 I've got a ways to go, and I try and drill it inot my students as they get going: protect yourself.

I guess it's easy to forget them (new riders), just last week, one of the office people was giving me directions to a project, "..... go down ruussell, take a right on glendale....." so I started singing Glendale Train. She couldn't remember who did the song.

Dear piffin;
I've only been here about a week, and I seem to have alienated some people. I've never spoken to people on line, and I think it's too easy to spill your guts to someone you've never met. It feels too strange at times. I'm pretty opinionated, but generally a kind spirited person...
thanks for the interaction...take care of yourself.

Jen,
Don't be too scarce. I for one am glad for your thoughtful posts. Just try not to get too drawn in when the mudslinging starts. It can ruin your day real fast. State your reasoned opinion, then step back and you'll be ok.
Or avoid the politics and religion for a while. People are always happy to talk construction...unless you get started on venting or insulation...

So?? Who here hasn't done that??
I read this thread and I don't recall any posts that had any offensive content.
If Taunton deleted the posts I'd sure like to know why. Did you delete your posts??? If you deleted your own posts, I guess you have that perogative, but I'm still confused.
Jen, stick around and stop deleting your posts. I'm sure most of the community would prefer that.
